During the miserable winter weather, we’re all victims of the effects of the wind, rain and even snow – none of which are ideal for your skin. With the darkest winter months still ahead of us, don't despair! Regardless of your skin type, there are many different steps you can take to protect your skin. To help you salvage some skin radiance, we’ve put together this handy list of tips to help you combat that dreaded dry skin.
Keep Yourself Hydrated
The number one rule for achieving radiant skin is to keep yourself hydrated by drinking a lot of water. No exactly a top secret tip, but one of the most important, as replenishing your fluid levels is great for giving you that glow. If you always think back to that summer where you looked great, you may realise that your skin was so good because you were more inclined to drink more water, giving you a more natural and beautiful look.
Without going too much into the nitty gritty science behind this, essentially your skin is an organ with cells that consist of water. If these cells are lacking in the necessary fluid, they won’t work as well meaning that it simply won’t look as plump or supple. If you don’t drink enough then you’ll have dry, tight and even flaky skin so make sure you’re forcing yourself to drink water frequently – remember it’s recommended you have 2 litres a day so don’t be slacking! If water’s not your thing, then why not try some green tea? A well-known anti-aging remedy, the tea has anti-oxidants that will only benefit you during this horrid time!
Keep up with the SPF
One that people tend to ignore but really shouldn’t, just because it’s not 30-degree heat doesn’t mean the sun isn’t still shining. You obviously won’t need those high factor lotions, but you should use a moisturiser that has a certain level of SPF protection. UV rays whatever the weather can still damage your skin so this is a vital investment if you want to keep your skin looking fresh and young. For the ideal solution, look for those moisturisers that continue an SPF30 or 50 factor to keep your skin cells as well protected as possible.
Invest in a Humidifier
A clever way of aiding in that soft skin look is to start using a humidifier. Indoor heating systems are notorious for drying out the air and leading to all sorts of skin problems. A strange technique but one that works to soothe your skin, try putting it on overnight as it’s good for your face and can prevent your lips from cracking whilst you’re off in your slumber!
Remember to Exfoliate
We all know that foundation applied to cracked and flaky skin doesn’t look great, which is why exfoliating is so important. If you choose to exfoliate in the comfort of your own home, then buy a skin product that is oil based to prevent your skin from drying out further. If you don’t already have a routine, then get one! If you want to give yourself a head start then why not get a milk peel or an LED face mask? We would highly recommend it if you've been a little behind with your winter skincare routine, as these treatments can help remove dead skin and clear your pores, giving you much smoother, revitalised look.
All you need to keep in mind that it is all about maintenance. If you neglect your skin, then it’s not only bad for your appearance but also your health. Make sure you have that routine that protects you from the harsh weather and also that accommodates to your skin's needs. It’s not only vital for now but also for maintaining that younger look for the future.
